Lithium Batteries aboard R/V Sikuliaq
In May 2012, UNOLS released a circular on the increasing prevalence of
lithium batteries in oceanographic research. These batteries can be very useful, but
also very dangerous.
Chapter 9 of the UNOLS Research Vessel Safety Standards Manual offers general guidelines/procedures regarding lithium battery handling, usage, storage and disposal aboard UNOLS vessels.
The UNOLS
Lithium Battery Safety Circular and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Lithium
Battery Safety Procedure provide more details about these procedures.
R/V Sikuliaq follows the procedures noted above.
If you are going to bring lithium batteries aboard Sikuliaq, you must abide by the procedures noted in
the documents referenced. Each chief scientist must bring the proper storage units for
their batteries and ensure that personnel using the batteries are properly trained in the use and risks of the batteries.
