Permits and Permissions
Overview
It is common for scientific activities aboard research vessels to require permits and impact studies for science activities such as but not limited to the following:
- Operations in Marine Sanctuaries and Marine Protected Areas
- Collection of specimens
- Use of Acoustics in the ocean
- Operations impacting protected resources
- Impact studies - The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
Procedure
- It is the responsibility of the Chief Scientist to ensure that all permits necessary for their cruise are obtained. The process to obtain permits should begin well in advance of the cruise date. It is recommended that the process begins at least one year prior to the cruise date.
- The Chief Scientist will provide updates on permitting progress to the Marine Superintendent and aid in coordinating efforts between the UAF Office of Research Integrity and the Principle Investigator's institution counterpart.
- The Chief Scientist will provide copies of all permits/permissions to the Marine Superintendent as they become available.
- It is the responsibility of the Chief Scientist to carry the permits onboard the vessel and to ensure that science operations fall within the realm of the permits/permissions they have been granted.
